How Savage Brands Replaced Legacy File Servers With Egnyte
In case you missed it, I recently joined Egnyte for a webinar on rethinking your file server strategy. It was a genuinely great conversation (not just saying that because they invited me), and if you didn’t catch it live, it’s worth a watch.
Since I shared a bit of Savage Brands’ cloud journey there, I thought I’d pull back the curtain a little more for you. The real story is always messier and more interesting.
The Challenge of Legacy On-Premise Infrastructure: Why We Knew It Was Time to Move On
Savage Brands has been around since 1972, which in tech years is several lifetimes. We’re a women-owned business focused on branding, marketing, and internal communication. Our goal is to help organizations unleash the good in themselves and their people.
Here’s the reality. Great creative work doesn’t happen in spite of your infrastructure. It happens because of it.
When I stepped into my role five years ago, I inherited what I can only describe as a museum of past IT decisions. We had:
- Four NAS units
- Four aging Apple Xserves
- A backup strategy that felt more like crossed fingers than a system
And my personal favorite. Files we literally couldn’t open anymore.
It wasn’t just inefficient, it was fragile. If one server had an issue, productivity across the company took a hit. Designers stalled. Collaboration stopped. Everyone waited.
That’s when it became clear. We didn’t just need an upgrade. We needed a full rethink.
The Seamless Cloud Migration to Egnyte
I’ll be honest. When we decided to move to Egnyte, I mentally prepared for pain. I told the team to expect downtime. I blocked off time. I braced for chaos. And then it didn’t happen.
The migration was so smooth I thought I’d missed something critical. During the transfer, we could see—in real time—what wasn’t moving over. It was usually minor naming issues which we fixed instantly and kept going.
What I expected to take a week took a weekend.
By Monday morning, everyone was back online like nothing had happened. Except everything was better.
Collaboration That ‘Just Works’ for Creatives “
Before Egnyte, our designers had to jump through hoops just to do their jobs:
- Download massive InDesign files
- Track all the linked assets manually
- Save versions locally
- Hope nothing broke
And of course, files were flying around via email. Version control turned into a guessing game. Which one is the real final_final_v7?
Now things are simple. Designers open files directly from Egnyte and just work. No extra steps. Sharing is just sending a secure link. From my side, I can see what’s happening. Who accessed what. When. How. It’s one of those changes that feels small until you realize how much friction it removed.
The Unexpected MVP: The Desktop App
If you ask my team what they love most, it is probably not what you would expect.
It’s Egnyte’s Desktop App.
Being able to work directly from Finder without changing habits or learning a new system made a huge difference. Adoption was almost effortless, which is half the battle with any new technology.
Secure Governance and Access Control for Peace of Mind
Before Egnyte, access control wasn’t ideal. Permissions were handled individually, which made it very easy for someone to keep access long after they should have lost it. Now we use group-based access. It’s cleaner, safer, and far less prone to human error. Even better, users only see what they have access to. No mystery folders. No awkward moments wondering if they should have access. No FOMO.
On top of that, I have real-time visibility. If something unusual happens, like someone downloads a large number of files, I can see it immediately. And because Egnyte uses multiple data centers, one of my biggest fears—a backup failure at the worst possible time—is no longer hanging over us.
Secure AI Adoption With Egnyte’s AI
Like most IT leaders, I have a healthy skepticism of anything labeled “free AI.” If the product is free, your data is probably the product. At the same time, you can’t just shut it down. If people want to use AI, they’ll find a way. That’s how shadow IT starts.
So instead of saying “No” to AI, I ask a different question. What problem are you trying to solve? We’re building AI policies that are simple and memorable. No one follows a 40-page document.
That’s why I’m excited about Egnyte’s AI capabilities. They live within our existing secure environment, allowing our team to experiment without exposing our data to unnecessary risk.
Looking Ahead
At this point, Egnyte is more than a vendor. It’s a partner. From the migration to ongoing support to rolling out features that actually matter, they’ve aligned with how we work and where we’re going.
With AI accelerating everything, having a secure and centralized foundation isn’t just helpful. It’s essential.
If I Could Do One Thing Differently
I’d have made the move sooner. Our old server room is gone. In its place is a system that’s faster, more secure, and actually supports how we work today. We’re no longer held back by outdated infrastructure.
We’re lighter. We’re faster. And we’re ready for what comes next.
